Devil's Candy Vol. 1 - Rem & Bikkuri

5/5 ⭐ Thanks to VIZ & NetGalley for the early copy in exchange for an honest review. I was very much looking forward to this webcomic to be released in print format. I had not experienced it as a webcomic so this was exciting for me. It looked so intriguing to me and I was not disappointed. I love when the norm or what is expected from the titles or descriptions and characters is not what it actually becomes and there is a different take on it. Which is the case for Devil's Candy. A universe full of devils and daemons and scientific inquiry that also touches on the importance of being true to oneself. It wa s refreshing to see a graphic novel that focuse d on more than just a battle scene or a romance arc. It explore d elements of learning to love oneself for what they have and they have the alternate strong female characters and, in the case of Kazu, a weaker male character who still managed to make himself useful and helpful. And not resentful at all at being the weaker o

Barely Functional Adult - Meichi Ng

5/5 ⭐   Every person aged 18 and on, should read this book. Any person who's ever questioned where they were in their life, what they were going to do, or what they wanted to do with their life should read this book.  A wonderful collection of heart-touching and breakthrough-inducing short stories with quirky, clever comics mixed in.  Meichi Ng presents all the conundrums that are present in so many of our lives. It's a sort of comfort seeing it from someone else's perspective, that you're not alone in feeling a certain way or having a similar experience.  I managed to read this beauty in its entirety in one sitting, I devoured it. Had multiple breakthroughs about certain things I had been struggling with and then proceeded to force a copy on everyone I was working with that night.  If you have an opportunity to read this one, I highly highly recommend you pick it up. The break up of the text with the comics plus photos in certain stories makes it feel manageable in a d

Craven Manor - Darcy Coates

5/5 ⭐   Daniel is desperate for a job, and when he finally gets one that seems too good to be true he wonders if it's really all worth it. A groundskeeper position at a hidden, derelict mansion. Room and board included with only a few simple rules that he must follow. Could his luck really have turned around that quickly? Craven Manor is a falling down dilapidated old home with a crypt. The mysterious owner only communicating through letters and gold coins. A murder of crows lurking in the treetops and a cat watching his every move. Spooky much? This is a horror/supernatural story and I think is technically my first one in a pure horror genre and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I dislike horror movies and most scary entertainment but I devoured this story in a matter of days. Like two days. Not only is the story rich in description and detail, but the characters we are introduced to are also unique and so fascinating. Even though I wanted to wack Kyle upside the head wi

The Escapement - Lavie Tidhar

5/5 ⭐ I don't usually read fantasy and I haven't read anything from Lavie Tidhar before so this is an interesting introduction for me. I wasn't totally excited when I realized clowns were going to be a huge part of the story but wanted to give it fair chance beyond my discomfort. The description is very detailed without feeling overwhelming. The world-building alone paints a vivid environment. In fact, two environments that we see the father traverse into to search for an item that could save his sick and dying son. While I didn't feel compelled to complete this story, I did. Getting to the end and having watched the struggle of both the Father and the Stranger in parallels search for this flower they both desperately seek was a lot and I definitely had that 'woah' moment of finally getting there. I definitely recommend this to fantasy lovers and those who are interested in Lavie Tidhar's work.  5/9/21 *This review was previously posted on my Google Site.

The Dire Days of Willowweep Manor - Shaenon K. Garrity

5/5 ⭐ I really love the graphic novels that have been coming out these past few years and this one is no exception. I was so excited to read this when I saw the description and it kept me entranced from page one. I basically read it one sitting, I love Haley. She is probably my favorite character this year. She is dedicated, exciting, powerful, and also she is a POC. She is a hoot. I loved that she wasn't willing to change who she was because of the other characters' demands or expectations of her. Which we saw later on influence the others to step out of their assigned character roles into something else that they wanted to be or just to try. The plot may come off as outlandish and cheesy but when you really look at it, it's about more than trying to stop leaks in the universe and being who you are truly and also allowing yourself to explore who you are and who you might want to be. Which I think is something we take for granted and this story does a really good job of put
