May Wrap-Up

Welcome to the Solarium~
I actually had to re write this post because I unintentionally deleted it. That was very upsetting but I sucked it up and rewrote it.

Overall, May was a really good month. I made a major dent in my TBR list (even though it grew constantly) and I made some progress on my WIPs.

So without further ado, let's get in to it~

Over the month of May I read and finished 11 titles:

  • The Honeys by Ryan La Sala (ARC) 5/5 - a YA horror novel featuring a diverse set of characters and an interesting horror twist.
  • Gallows Hill  by Darcy Coates (ARC) 5/5 - another solid horror from Darcy Coates featuring a cursed family on blood soaked land.
  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers💜- a monk and robot meet in the wilderness and talk about anything and everything.
  • The Last to Vanish by Megan Miranda (ARC) 4/5 - a thriller set in a small town full to bursting with secrets.
  • The Accidental Pinup by Danielle Jackson (ARC) 4/5 - a body positive romance featuring a POC main character who is an absolute badass.
  • Cleopatra's Dagger by Carole Lawrence 3/5 - a disappointing historical mystery featuring a female reporter, murder, and Egyptology based in the 1880s.
  • Ghost Music by An Yu(ARC) 4/5 - an atmospheric journey of self-discovery, art, and expression.
  • A Galaxy Next Door, Vol. 1 5/5 - a fun and fresh shojo manga that features a blossoming romance between two manga artists.
  • Smile Beach Murder by Alicia Bessette 5/5 - a promising start to a new cozy mystery series set on a popular but secluded east coast island.
  • Dinner with Eloise (ARC) 3/5 - a promising horror novel that missed the mark for me.
  • Queerly Beloved by Susie Dumond 3.5/5 - marked as a queer romcom meets 27 dresses, this one fell flat for me.
Most Liked

  • A Psalm for the Wild-Built - I love Becky Chambers work so much. She has a way of creating characters that are relatable and an environment that is so rich and immersive for the reader.

Least Liked

  • Queerly Beloved - this rom com meets 27 dresses promised a lot but ended up falling flat for me. I expected a lot more than what was there.

ARC #'s

I try to read ARC's that are within my collection responsibilities but also some that I am interested in.

All the ARCs, except for The Last to Vanish, I got as eBooks through NetGalley and Edelweiss+. I was able to receive a few graphic novels/manga too as those tend to be quick reads for me.

It was a good month for ARCs.

I am working my way through The Lighthouse Witches by CJ Cooke which is a mystery about missing sisters, wildings, and a lighthouse.

And I am rereading Craven Manor by Darcy Coates. I love this book and since I finally got my own copy I couldn't wait to reread it.

For June I want to read some books specifically for Pride. I have a few on my TBR list that will work perfectly.

Also, I have some popular titles that I have been sitting on that I want to read. I want to see what all the hype is about.

Rewatching Supernatural and since it is about my 12th rewatch I tend to skip episodes that aren't my favorite.

We also got Harry Styles new album in May which I have had on repeat. I like listening to it while driving with my windows down. It is a vibe.

How was your reading in May? Read anything good? What's on your TBR? Let me know in the comments below!

The Family Plot - Megan Collins

4/5 ⭐ A family brought up learning about everything through the lens of true crime. Murder, mayhem, and death are the Lighthouse family's close companions. I was looking forward to this book since reading the summary. I have a mild interest in true crime and was interested in seeing how this story would incorporate such a widely talked about topic. For some, true crime is overdone and saturates media. And if anything, I think Collins does a fantastic job of acknowledging that fact and takes on true crime in a new and unique fashion. We are immediately introduced to the main setting, Blackburn Island, home to a serial killer who was never caught and the home of the 4 Lighthouse children and their... peculiar parents. I thought that Collins did a good job with the characters introducing them one right after another without it feeling rushed or like we were missing something. If anything it felt as though we learned a lot about the family within just the first few chapters. Without ...

Up All Night - Laura Silverman

4/5 ⭐   Thirteen short stories exploring what happens at night. A perfect summer read for when you're not ready to go to sleep just yet. This anthology features a wide variety of stories all focusing on high schoolers/young adults and certain events or predicaments that they must deal with. Added with the I am not the most familiar with anthologies but I did enjoy the variety and that they were diverse in their characters and representations. I think a lot of teens would enjoy this one. I do think that some stories were better than others, but that is just my opinion. Overall, I really enjoyed this anthology. Thanks to Algonquin Young Readers & NetGalley for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.  6/22/21 *This review was previously posted on my Google Site.

Gallows Hill - Darcy Coates

5/5 ⭐ TBR: 9/6/22 And she is back with another bone-chilling, keep you up all night, make your heart pound horror. If you’ve been around you know that I love Darcy Coates' work. And any and every chance I get, I try to get a copy to read and review. When I saw that she was releasing a second novel this year I squealed and immediately when on the hunt for the arc. Enter Margot Hull, daughter of the recently deceased Hugh and Maria Hull, owners of the world-renowned Gallows Hill Winery. Margot knows little about her parents and her family as she was sent away at a young age and never went back until the day of the funeral. When she arrives at her old family home, secrets long buried come to light as Margot is forced to face the nightmares that curse the land. This is a slow burn tense and foreboding atmospheric masterpiece. And what I thought was going to be a ghost story turned out to be so much more, in the best way possible. This haunted house tale comes with it all. A tragic, blo...
