Spooky Season Recommendations

Happy Halloween Bookworms!

If you are anything like me than this time of year is your favorite. I love fall with the cooling weather, the leaves changing colors, and of course, Halloween. And I am also a big fan of reading for the season. Of course read whatever you want whenever you want but there is just something very satisfying about reading something spooky or just a little darker for the season.

Especially if you are able to set the mood with cozy blankets, warm tea and lit candles. Bonus points if it is foggy or raining out.

Now, with out further ado time for some book recommendations.

  • Cackle by Rachel Harrison
Fresh starts, new friends, and friendly spiders. This speculative fiction from Rachel Harrison left me speechless.

Everyone has dreamed of starting over in a new town where no one knows you and your past doesn't define you. Here, that happens and so much more.

Perfect for: Those looking for a lighter fantasy, powerful friendships, and characters taking back what is theirs.

  • Over My Dead Body by Sweeney Boo
This is a YA graphic novel with some of the most beautiful art I have ever seen. And as some one who is a slightly picky about the art in my graphic novels, that's saying something.

Found families, magical institutions, and more wait for you as folly Abby as she tries to find her missing friend and learn about the dark truth of the woods that surround the school.

Perfect for fans of: found family, magic, and gorgeous artwork.

  • Craven Manor by Darcy Coates
The first horror novel I read and my first Coates novel that started my love of the genre. This was definitely one that caught my eye by the cover alone.

This atmospheric gothic horror will leave you breathless from fear but also want as you venture into the mysteries of Craven Manor and all the secrets it holds. As well as a cast of characters you can't help but to root for.

Perfect for fans of: gothic horror, grand mansions, and rooting for the underdog.

  • Daisy Darker by Alice Feeney
One of my favorite novels of 2022. I was immediately drawn in by promises hints of shared elements with And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie, my favorite work of hers. And I was not disappointed.

This dark thriller will leave you on the edge of your seat as you race to figure out what happens. The ending will leave you in shock and thrilled at what a masterpiece Alice Feeney has pulled off.

Perfect for fans of: locked room mysteries, old school murder mysteries, and family drama.

  • The Book of Accidents by Chunk Windig

  • Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes

And I think that'll do it! There are a ton more titles and if I watched scary movies or tv shows I am sure I would have some of those recs. But alas, I don't.

What are you looking forward to this spooky season?

The Family Plot - Megan Collins

4/5 ⭐ A family brought up learning about everything through the lens of true crime. Murder, mayhem, and death are the Lighthouse family's close companions. I was looking forward to this book since reading the summary. I have a mild interest in true crime and was interested in seeing how this story would incorporate such a widely talked about topic. For some, true crime is overdone and saturates media. And if anything, I think Collins does a fantastic job of acknowledging that fact and takes on true crime in a new and unique fashion. We are immediately introduced to the main setting, Blackburn Island, home to a serial killer who was never caught and the home of the 4 Lighthouse children and their... peculiar parents. I thought that Collins did a good job with the characters introducing them one right after another without it feeling rushed or like we were missing something. If anything it felt as though we learned a lot about the family within just the first few chapters. Without ...

Up All Night - Laura Silverman

4/5 ⭐   Thirteen short stories exploring what happens at night. A perfect summer read for when you're not ready to go to sleep just yet. This anthology features a wide variety of stories all focusing on high schoolers/young adults and certain events or predicaments that they must deal with. Added with the I am not the most familiar with anthologies but I did enjoy the variety and that they were diverse in their characters and representations. I think a lot of teens would enjoy this one. I do think that some stories were better than others, but that is just my opinion. Overall, I really enjoyed this anthology. Thanks to Algonquin Young Readers & NetGalley for the early copy in exchange for an honest review.  6/22/21 *This review was previously posted on my Google Site.

Certain Dark Things - Silvia Moreno-Garcia

5/5 ⭐ A fresh take on the old classic, Silvia Moreno-Garcia manages to reimagine vampire lore into something completely unique. Take whatever previous notions you have of vampire stories and toss them out the window. She managed to introduce such an interesting take on vampires, ones that take on aspects from their cultures like Alt with ties to Aztec mythology and so on.  All of these subspecies of vampire builds on the richness of the world Moreno-Garcia created. Alt flees to Mexico City, a closed nation free from any vampire after her family is killed by a rival gang of Necro vampires(a deadly European subspecies of vampires). With only Cualli, her loyal and deadly dog, and a garbage boy named Domingo helping her, she has to flee both the Necros and human gangs who wish her dead.  Vampire gangs are definitely a new one for me. The characters come to life on the page within the excellent worldbuilding. You just get lost in the story, captivated until the very end.  The ...
